Today marks the 60th anniversary of Agnico Eagle Mines Limited, one of the largest gold mining companies in the world.
On October 25, 1957, a small team of mining pioneers propped open their “portal door” for business as Agnico Mines. The “Eagle” came later, in 1972, when Agnico merged with Eagle Gold Mines and became known as Agnico Eagle Mines Limited.
What a long amazing flight it has been since then. From humble beginnings as a small silver producer in northeastern Ontario, Agnico Eagle has transformed itself into a global powerhouse with eight gold operations on two different continents. And starting in 2019, we are poised to grow again as we open two new sites in the Nunavut region of northern Canada.
In kicking off the 60th anniversary celebrations, Sean Boyd, our Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, “Agnico Eagle has built a legacy, a reputation and a “culture of the heart” that endures. Our founder, Paul Penna, wanted to build a company whose common thread was goodness – one that was bursting with a generosity of spirit and family pride. I think the greatest tribute we can pay to him, and to ourselves, is that every Agnico Eagle employee and retiree knows that we have fulfilled his dream. And that portends well for the future of our company.”
We are excited to celebrate this special day with our friends and colleagues around the world. In Toronto, Agnico Eagle has been invited to kick off the celebrations by ringing the bell to open trading at the Toronto Stock Exchange. Local celebrations are also taking place this week at our locations in Finland, Mexico, Canada, the United States and Sweden.
